Banwarilal Bhalotia College at Asansol is one of the premier institutions in the fields of General & Technology-based education under the University of Burdwan, West Bengal and has already earned good reputation for its academic excellence, congenial environment and an exquisite geographical situation. At present, the college is housed in an attractive multi-storied building including two recently built large annexed edifices with a beautiful broad campus, having a sylvan background all around, consisting wide play ground, spacious classrooms, properly equipped laboratories with adequate apparatus, and, to be proud of, sufficient number of computer labs. It has got multifarious courses to teach in Arts & Science (both Pass & Hons) having P.G. in Physics as an extra colourful feather. The privilege of getting the most sincere and dedicated service rendered by highly qualified faculty members; the group of skilful Lab Assistants and efficient non – teaching staff is an added facility. The Post Graduate courses in Zoology, Botany, Hindi MBA & MCA and the undergraduate course in Physical Education as general subject and Bio-technology (Hons.) (Self-financing) are in the offing. B.A. Honours Course in Education & Urdu have been introduced from 2008-09 session with the affiliation of the University of Burdwan. It is true that the start of this millennium has brought along with it more abounding energy, dedication and devotion – the globalization of scientific knowledge has made it an imperative for the thinking people to arrange and rearrange the scientific stratagem for the benefit of the mankind : B.B. College could not take its eye off and therefore, to keep pace with these currents of the world affairs, it has introduced the technological and vocational courses like BCA, BBA,; Department of Env. & Water Management and TRAINING COURSES for the Dry farming, Cultivation of Aromatic and Medicinal plants Mushroom, Lac cultivation, Vermicomposting, Sericulture training and soil – water analysis etc, to render services to the society, and with these exposures the college is capable to make the people of this coal belt confident that apart from coal there are other resources here which can give them sufficient footings in life, Further again, the college also runs two study centres for IGNOU and NSOU. Recently this institution has been accredited by NAAC and evaluated as ‘Grade A’ College. This institution is expected to be declared soon as ‘Centre of Excellence’.
It is my proud privilege to declare that having accredited Grade ‘A’ by NAAC & with the rarest of rare titles: ” B.B. College, A Centre with Potential for Excellence’ we are striding ahead very fast with the singular motto- ‘to strive, to seek, to find & not to yield’- we are boastful of, not what we have done but of what we can do to achieve the pinnacle of success. Since 1944, B.B. College (formally known as Asansol College at Atwal Bhavan), as a premier institution, has been playing a very significant role in imparting education to a sizable section of Bengali & non-Bengali students of the western part of the district of Burdwan to ensure the right to education for all and to provide new and alternative learning opportunities at par the growing demands of the regional & global levels. We are striving hard to introduce Industry – oriented specific courses based on creditable impact analysis & our objective is to equip people with knowledge & skills for making them competent & confident to lead a healthy life in harmony with social values – as a result we are running ahead with 28 Honours courses apart from the modern professional courses like BBA & BCA, & its my special privilege to announce that the new courses with the affiliation of the University of Burdwan :- B. A. Hons in Education, Urdu and B.Sc (Hons) in Environmental Science, General Physical Education as combination subjects are running successfully and I want to focus the people of the coal belt, popularly known for its abundant reserve of fossil fuel, that B. B. College strenuously endeavours to impart the best of education to make one fit to fight for existence. We do never forget that ” education is the manifestation of perfection already in man ” – (Swami Vivekananda) & therefore, the only mission of the faculty members is to remove obstacles from the way of learning and all our teachers, needles to say, highly qualified potential have dedicated themselves to cater best education to students who come from the grass-root level (some of them are first generation learners). The faculty members are constantly updating themselves through, Research works, participation of different national & international seminars & symposiums etc. The college is actually trying hard to set a pedagogic goal that is less hectoring and more learner facilitating. And attempt has been made to realize the improvement role of Multiple Intelligence Theory to bring change in Higher Education. To encourage faculty and learners we apply knowledge in ways that contribute to social, economical and ethical quality of life in Higher Education system with the use of bloom taxonomy and gender multiple intelligence theory as tools of change in order to open a new vistas of learning, we have already applied to the University of Burdwan for affiliation of two new courses – Honours in Psychology and M.A. in Hindi from the ensuing session, 2010 – 11..
I feel proud to declare that along with undergraduate & post graduate courses (Students of PG course in Physics are showing consistently satisfactory performance during last few years), this multi shift single unit college provides for Distance Education courses like IGNOU, ODL & NSOU with some 5000, 500 & 2500 students respectively. We are equally keen in simultaneous teaching of the technical courses & with proper grooming we make our students competent in the arena of services, resulting the infatuation of renowned companies over picking up suitable candidates from the college campus with lucrative salary offers. We have also training courses for the Dry Farming, Cultivation of Aromatic & Medicinal Plants, Mushroom, Lac Cultivation, Vermi Composting, sericulture etc. to render services to society & thus we have turned people from Lab to Land and Land to Lab in cooperation with the Central Govt. of India & the Govt. of West Bengal. Fruitfully enough, the college has been recognised as the ‘Model College’ by the Higher Education Council, West Bengal. I feel delighted to see that Broad Band Internet connectivity to almost all departments could be finally done to cater to the demands of all its staff & students, and the Entrepreneurship Development Cell at B. B. College is rapidly growing and my dream is to give the college the status of wi fi campus. We are eager to introduce the Employment Generation Training Scheme at an earliest opportunity with the sole intention to harmonise the traditional and experimental courses. EDU-SAT system of education is also in operation. For convenience, we have a post office branch, BSNL Exchange Office and soon to inaugurate a Bank ATM Counter. Women-Redressal Cell is properly functioning.
B. B. College believes in that education which makes an all round development of a student & with an eye to that, the endeavours of NCC & the NSS units, with immense possibility are solemnly remembered – students of NCC unit are taking part even in National Parade on Republic Day in New Delhi & consequently the cadres are getting offers from Central Govt. Armed Forces. NSS units undertake remarkable welfare programme such as Health Camps in slams, blood donation camp, seminars & symposiums, social awareness campaign & so on. This activities always involve students to make them aware of the social conditions of our people. Our Non-teaching minstrel, though reduced in number, is so efficient that they perform the multifarious jobs in time to help the smooth running of the institution.
The Students’ Union of the college is highly cooperative to the students as well as to the administration. They never forget that the basic duty of the Union is to voice the demands of the students, create & maintain a healthy academic atmosphere & be involved in developmental activities as well as to foster a good fraternity amongst the teachers, non-teaching staff & students. They keep the Union as the only platform for students to come together for a common cause. Besides, the Union provides through the Annual College Magazine a forum to the students to express their innate literary talents and capacity for innovative thinking. Other than the Annual Function, the students’ union arrange exhibition, debate competition, cultural competition in Social Function along with Annual – Sports meet etc. We are proud of our students.
I am to add further that B. B. College always stretches its helpful hands with different financial facilities like half/full free studentship, assistance from students aid fund etc. to those who are unable to afford the minimum educational expenses. Our faculty members are considerate to our students & help them with books & other materials. Apart from our resourceful Central Library, the Departmental Libraries with regular reading, lending & Book Bank facilities help the students with Texts, References, Magazines & Periodicals. Teachers are close at hand; approachable inside & outside of the class room with a singular object to enhance and satiate the hunger for knowledge : to help them ” To follow knowledge like a sinking star/ Beyond the utmost bound of human thought”. We are pledged to accommodate each & every student, if meritoriously fit.
We are conscious that ours is an uphill task, though problems are manifold and the solutions not too easy. Situated in the eastern outskirts of a crowded town (Global position : T-2, N=230, 24’49.2″ E= 860 59′ 49.2″, El = 112) the college is still badly cramped for space – though we have plot A of 7.2268 Acres and Plot B of 0.5821 (empty land) Acres, we are just to have a good Girls’ Hostel, an auditorium worth the name. The library & laboratories are congested beyond capacity & specially the paucity of class rooms is a positive hindrance for academic expansion. Nevertheless, Cynicism cannot overtake us and the process of sowing the to-be-s in addition to dispensing the harvest is continuing. However, an academic institution justifies its existence by bringing about a qualitative change in social life. Among the alumni of B. B. College are men & women of this coal belt who have achieved eminence in different spheres; but its real justification is to be found in the fact that it has lit the lamp of learning in a multitude of humble homes in its surrounding areas, many of the families having their first generation to cross the threshold of higher education.
I consider myself fortunate to be the man in steer of such a big well reputed college and before to stop my pen I must acknowledge my indebtedness to some of the stalwarts inside & outside the college who always remain by the side to administer my commitment. In conclusion, I remember with benign modesty the dreams of those Dreamers who planted the sapling some 65 years ago what is now to be a bunyan tree under my humble, sincere care. However, no scope of complacency is there and we are aware that a lot still remains to be achieved. The accreditation is a constant reminder that we are to maintain our standard & we now strive to obtain the recognition as Centre with Potential for : Super Excellence.
We have got the affiliation to teach M.A. course in English, Hindi & Political Science & Degree course in Arts, Science and Commerce with some other subjects from IGNOU, Convergence Course (ODL) from the ensuing session 2009-2010 through regular classes & instructional method.
Like previous years, in 2010-11 session also we have conducted workshop in Entrepreneurship Development Program sponsored by Environmental Science, BBA & BCA Deptts. and the eminent Resource persons from inside & outside the college have delivered lectures for the development of the students skill.
It’s a pleasure to announce that Girls’ Hostel Building in a pastoral setting of the college campus is on the way to completion & this Girls’ Hostel would be a colourful feather to be added to the college success.
I am proud of our NSS units and it is my pleasure to say that, being recommended by the University of Burdwan, the NSS units of B.B. College went to Maharashtra to participate in the 7 Day National Cultural Integration Camp 2010-2011, sponsored by the Govt. of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It is a rare and golden opportunity to our students to expose their talents at the national level. Our college was the only institute in this region (Eastern) to obtain this honour. The students participated in almost all events but their performance in the Folk Dance Group was winsome and they obtained the Red Ribbon in the eastern region. Besides, the units have done stupendous jobs in their adopted village Namo Jamdoba during 2010-11 session.
Again, in regard to admission, advertisement is always done and counseling process on the basis of merit is strictly maintained. Reservation policy is also adhered to.
Classes (PG, Hons, & Pass) are regularly held and special classes are conducted for the students of backward classes. It is a challenging phenomena to the faculty members. Students are helped with feed back mechanism and question bank etc. As a result, the drop out rate is minimum. College also provides proficiency prizes regularly. During 2010-11 session, different departments of the college have organized special coaching classes for both backward and forward learners under UGC sponsored CPE program and students are much benefited by the lectures of the External University – Teachers /Experts. Under the same program, educational tours with the students of different departments, specially Sanskrit, Hindi, Zoology, Geography, Physics, Botany etc. are successfully conducted.
I find it necessary to inform that most of the teachers are involved in innovative research works – some of them have already been registered for Ph.D works and some of them are striving for and lot of them are working as guide / supervisor to M. Phil & Ph.D. Courses. Teachers are, in general, motivated to excel in their respective areas and particularly in communicative services. Faculty Team leadership systematically encourages the growth & excellence of the college.
